British Columbia is located in the
westernmost part of Canada's provinces and is most popular for its
natural beauty. It was in 1871 when the British Columbia became the
sixth province of Canada. The capital of the British Columbia is
called Victoria, this is the 15th largest metropolitan region within
Canada. The names British Columbia was chosen by Queen Victoria in
1858 when the Mainland became a British colony. The British Columbia
borders the Pacific Ocean on the west end next to Alaska.
The British Columbia is set between the Pacific
Ocean which is in the west and the Rocky Mountains which is in the
east. British Columbia has some amazing landscapes and is home to a
geographical diversity that lets visitors enjoy a wide variety of
activities and adventures. The adventurous visitors can climb
mountains, run on the rivers, lay on the beaches, hike through the
forests, and parks to stroll with warm summer lakes to relax by.
British Columbia usually has a temperate climate due to the fact
that where there are mountains there is snow. For the ones who
aren't as adventurous there are world class exhibition, uptown
shopping, and great tasting restaurants.
Some people think that BC's coastal region has
become one of the most densely populated areas in North America.
Before the Europeans arrived in BC the population was somewhere
around 300,000. This was the way of life for thousands of years
until 1778 when the British arrived. It was Captain James Cook who
first arrived on the west coast of Vancouver Island in 1778, his
plan was to trade with the Nuu-chah-nulth people. After Captain
James arrived there was a wave of Europeans settlers that came to BC
who were carrying smallpox and many other diseases that started to
minimize the population.
During the 1860's there was a rapid flow of
prospectors, merchants, pioneers and many other colorful figures
that were all brought on by the discovery of gold in the Fraser
River and the Cariboo. These people came from all over the world,
even from as far away as China. During this time there was an
explosion of economic expansion, there were large cities, new roads,
railways and steamships that were constructed to carry the extra
loads. There were many boomtowns that were born and legends that
were made but not all people had good luck, there were many who lost
ancestral lands in 1876.
